Activities
The Colorado Ski Museum, which is located in the Vail Transportation Center, has wonderful historical artifacts from Colorado's skiing and snowboard heritage. At the Museum, you can see great exhibits on the timeline of skiing and snowboarding, and check out the exhibit on the 10th Mountain Division, which was based at Camp Hale. Ashcroft Ghost Town is located in the Ashcroft Valley, offering access to both stunning mountain beauty and Old West history. In 1883, this former mining town was prospering with 20 saloons, a school and two newspapers. Today twelve original buildings still stand as silent monuments to a bygone era. Near Breckenridge on I-70 is the Georgetown Loop Historic Railroad, one of Colorado's great narrow gauge railroads. An engineering marvel originally built in 1884, ride the railroad and be astounded by the Devil's Gate High Bridge, the beautiful Rocky Mountain views and the Georgetown Loop.
Events
Each January, blank canvases of snow become works of art, a whimsical bouquet of enormous flowers, to thought provoking abstract shapes. These masterpieces are sculpted before thousands of spectators over the course of five days in the heart of Breckenridge. Aspen's spectacular mountain setting provides a wonderful open air gallery for the Aspen Art Festival in July, with over 150 exhibitors offering jewelry, pottery, sculpture, glass, ceramics, paintings and prints. The Vail Arts Festival is a three-day festival featuring 120 artists from across the U. S. Beginning in mid August, visual and performing arts will be featured throughout the weekend. The Vail Arts festival features gallery class arts and exquisite custom jewelry in beautiful Vail Village.
Mountain Activities
The resorts of Aspen, Breckenridge, and Vail are among the most famous ski resorts in the United States, but they and the rest of the Colorado ski resorts do not have to be covered in snow to enjoy. While well known for the skiing and snowboarding, in the summer and fall they offer spectacular backgrounds for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, camping, and fishing.
Golfing
Summer in Colorado offers a great golf vacation and you can enjoy a competitive golf game on one of the many fine golf courses located in Colorado. The State has both private and public golf courses for both 9 and 18 holes of play, with professionals available for lessons. Great courses, beautiful greens and spectacular mountain views are just a couple of reasons why visitors can enjoy their golf vacation getaway.
History
One of the biggest influences on Colorado skiing history was the 10th Mountain Division. The U.S. Army trained the 10th in the Vail area for high country combat in Europe during World War II. Many of these men, based at the massive Camp Hale, south of Vail, returned from duty in Europe to the surroundings they had come to know during their training, the Rocky Mountains. These men guided the future of skiing in Colorado. One of these courageous pioneers, Peter Seibert, was one of the founders of the Vail Resort, and a member of the Ski Hall of Fame.
